You Choose

The only measurement is between my desire and my allowing.

Weekend off.

Friday was a blast and Saturday was full for girl-time and errands. Decided to take a quick trip to the coast and replenish :). Toes in the sand, waves were excellent, sun was warm but not too much.

Perfect.

Just perfect.

300 Again

To keep the body in good health is a duty…
otherwise we shall not be able to keep our mind strong and clear.”
Buddha

300aDay
Ugh! Not feeling it today, just keeping it simple throughout the day. Felt totally dragged out.

4x25 of each
  • 1st RND - early morning inside
  • 2nd RND - early afternoon outside
  • 3rd RND - before dinner back outside
  • last RND pre-epsom salt soak inside
Otherwise, rest, eat, replenish and enjoy the fall. It was a very busy work day, which I love.  So getting up and out between sessions was very welcome.

How cool is THIS?!

Meditation
I give thanks for and honor the miracle that IS my body.

Taking' It Easy

Any man who can drive safely while kissing a pretty girl
is simply not giving the kiss the attention it deserves.
 ~ Albert Einstein

Fully intending to get in and finish out the week, I woke up with my shoulder pinned in an awkward position. It hurt like heck for about an hour. Some simple mobility and a warm shower seemed to relaxed things back where they belong (she says crossing fingers ... EMOTM split jerks tomorrow!)

The winds have changed and smoke from the rim fire is thick again over the foothills/canyon. Frankly I think I am due for a massage. Hello Red Lantern, sounds a bit seedy but oh not so, I prefer keeping my clothes on for these poundings. Really prefer rotating the techniques and my feet are much appreciative of the reflexology. Gotta get with Patrick on his new technique ... he's harder to corner.  So, pushing out training until tomorrow. I take today as a 'listen to my body' day and HRV has been in the yellow for the last couple of days. No alarm, but time to breathe deeply (off the hill) and let the energy flow.

Catching up on some reading, enjoying a cup of coffee and a quiet house.Looking forward to some family time, snuggle and just lounging with my sweetie girl. The pre-teenage years, so much going on, want to just hang out in the retreat and see what topics we get to explore. We spend a fair amount of time reminiscing lately. I miss my mom and the stories we enjoy can be therapeutic.

I am feeling a green smoothie coming on ;), glass of wine with hubby tonight, some old fashioned charcoal bbq and a good flick (maybe, movies have been pretty disappointing lately).

It has only been a month since swim coaching has ended and that week or so I took off was very worth it. These last couple of weeks of coaching mornings with a few double coaching days has caught up with me again. Schedule, schedule, schedule can be pretty demanding and I get home at night wondering why I am actually so drained. I honestly have it darn good! Much as I enjoy it. Trying to balance the super mom/carpool manager, nutritionist, performance focused master athlete, wife and chicka can be a tad overwhelming. I like my version of plate spinning these life roles in my own mojo flow and look forward to getting back to it!

Rest, Recover, Replenish ~

StrongBody*ClearMind*FreeSpirit

I want to talk about rest, recovery and rest here.

Come back. It's not ready yet :)>

I took 2 days off. Mainly because I was so busy. No physical work done.

Hit the box on Saturday and Sunday for some great workouts
and it is feeling wonderful!

Yesterday was a doosie. Yet I woke up feeling surprisingly great! A little low on energy, not dog-tired as I expected, so YEAH! Coach, eat, nap, eat, shop with my sweetie girl, eat, snuggle, eat just a bit more. Good!

I was tempted to do today's CFRV WOD, always the KBs on my day off! But, a great Friday treat ;)! Plus, 12 Days of Christmas WOD coming soon!

Rest, Please

Felt like some skill work, but should be resting today...anxious about my trip and sitting for so long tomorrow. Anxious from the sway of the earthquake last night. It brought back some old memories of fight or flight. A bit of a jolt up here.

Tired and sore from the last 3 days but happy :). Shoulders could use a break, so WOD on the road! Looking forward to it.

The Rest of What?

Take rest;
a field that has rested
gives a bountiful crop.
~Ovid

~'if you are following the main site workouts or the same schedule (3 days on, 1 day off) every 4th and 8th week should be half intensity and the 12 week completely off. '

WHAT?!
  • Does my trainer, coach or affiliate know about this?
  • Am I suppose to be tracking this?
  • Shouldn't I just go in and kill it every time?
  • If so&so can do it...I don't want to them better than me.
If you have been involved in CrossFit for a while now, you know there is a certain flavor of kool aid that we gravitate to.

You love to hate it and yet, like a wreck, you can't help but focus on it and will rarely stay away. When all rational reasoning flies out the window and our primal instinct comes forth. It may range from I WANT! to I CAN! I WILL! I MUST! and the trials begin.

Even though we know that we shouldn't just comply with the workouts, but the recommendations around form before weight, nutrition, mobility, recovery and playing 'other' sports, the concept of constantly varied can be our biggest challenge. We are motivated by the games, those spectacular athletes that push it more than we can imagine. We are in love with the blood, sweat and tears (not necessarily the salty kind), addicted to our peeps, the family we have outside our 'nromal' world, the clock, the suffering and always...the WOD.

They key point here is not to get swallowed up but to truly find your strength. It may not show up in terms of weight on a bar. Allow your wins to shine through and your 'goats' to get some attention. CrossFit will ring your bell from the inside out. It may touch your heart, speak to your soul or your finger, knee or little toe just might be screaming at you. Sometimes I hear these questions...Why am I tired, hungry, craving, hiding, why am I not where I want to be? Even though I PR'd today, I am not satified. Yikes! What skill is that?

As I reflect on my last few years practicing CrossFit it is a good time to check in. So, best place to contemplate this is in my own stuff, if I were to take a good look at where I am, I would say that I am over due for some scheduled time off based on the calendar. BUT...I am feeling great. Body chem is stabilizing, blood work good, time off the deck has left me hydrated and feeling a few my recent workouts, but no real muscle soreness (which was not the case last month), so...I will take last week as my week off though I did more of an active recovery with those few days of sitting in sessions about our ancestral health and move on from there ;). Know the score. One of my 'inner circle' brought to my attention...and the rest is the most important part...my response was...the rest of what?

Ultimately, I believe awareness is the most important thing, and as a coach/trainer I instruct my athletes and clients to listen to their bodies. If not in optimal performance condition, schedule in some rest and recovery or if some rebuild is necessary, then include modification, scaling or a little periodization in the process to reach the goal. As an athlete, I AM the one responsible. CrossFit is an amazing opportunity that helps me become a better person in body, mind and spirit. It is not about just one way, hence the constantly varied that gets thrown around quite a bit. I am in it for the long haul. I don't want injury, breakdown or even to run out of gas. I want to take full advantage of every day that I can! Having fun and reaching new levels, which means taking the years in my wisdom seriously and kicking some serious butt while staying healthy and strong.~

NOW! Let's get to work ;)We have 12 new glorious weeks to play. ~j

Thursday - Unscheduled rest day ;-(

End of the swim season and just too many things to cram into the day. While the 13 & ups were kidnapped to the lake for a super fun day, the rest of the team enjoyed some Thursday fun day at the pool! Skills practice in disguise~

WOD will be revisited this weekend! Yeah! In the meantime, a delicious meal, some snuggle time and breathing is in order to keep the spirit soaring ;-).

It's all about the rest...

Work is not always required.
There is such a thing as sacred idleness.
~George MacDonald

Alternating periods of activity and rest
is necessary to survive, let alone thrive.
Capacity, interest, and mental endurance all wax and wane.
~Timothy Ferriss

The rest of what?! Well, that was my comment once when told that a recovery day (the rest) was essential. I have since learned to enjoy these days off and play with no expectation.

So today, ahhhh.
