Powerful

Two of the most powerful warriors are
patience and time.
~ Leo Tolstoy
Rest day
Absolutely no gym time! No coaching, no training, nada.

Some Indian Clubs this morning for technique, mobility and circulation. Prepping a bit for the Evolution Power Pack, though I am sure I will be completely blown away by what I will learn there!

Meditation

Not so much a meditation but a realization of what we should know we can control daily.

1. We have control over our opinions

2. We have control over our choices
3. We have control what we move away from
4. We have control over what we move toward

Food nugs

In the ETP world, today will be a CNTRL day, kinda
Last morning of eggs ;), parsley
Green smoothie & greek yogurt
Super splurge at BJs w/hubby ;) Bison burger w/bbq sauce, naked over slaw & romaine, chocolate chip pizookie & ice cream - overall really good, the bison was cooked very pink, seemed to digest well, but I did think twice about it. Cookie was devoured and enjoyed!

Good read
Love me some Dan John. Always keep things fresh.

Fluxing Your Muscle

"Wake at dawn with a winged heart and give thanks for another day of loving.”
~ Khalil Gibran

Day OFF! Rest, recovery and relax ;) Might drop in for a quick late afternoon mini-boxing session, but no other 'work', just play.

Another quick tidbit on eating an adequate whole food building based diet for health, performance and longevity. EAT! If you have been stuck in the carb depleted lifestyle that has become Paleo, you are doing it wrong! You are losing your potential for energy by yes, taking out those foods/nutrients that help to supply it. I am not talking twinkie cheats here peeps. Most Paleo eaters (as well as CrossFitters) are losing power, gaining fat and dumping metcons. Not a pretty site for one drinking the kool-aid. Under-eating calories is the top concerns when we take a deeper look. The Paleo (hard to define exactly) dietary guidelines were built as an anti-inflammatory program and it works extremely well.  There can be caveats which fall into a more Primal definition (more fluctuation in food options) and the many other names that this falls under (SCD, PHD, Bulletproof, etc.).  Get these basics under your belt and begin to strive for optimal!

What is important is to find the energy-flux. You must follow the basics noted in my last post regarding building muscle. It is not about simply eating more carbs and adjust for the Paleo deficit though. Flux means flow and we’re talking about energy flow into and out of the body. So energy-flux covers both the intake and expenditure sides of the equation.   Adjusting macronutrients so that you can eat more usable calories and all the while improve metabolism, lean mass and body fat %. How?!

  • You should be actively working with a strength program (CrossFit, Westside, Wendler, SMOLOV, StrongLifts etc.), include mobility/yoga and some basic conditioning (if not CF or otherwise prescribed).
  • Eat at TDEE on work days and TDEE -10% on rest/recovery days.
HUGE NOTE: If you are currently under calorie, you must gradually (10-20% increase weekly) work up to your TDEE unless you aren't concerned about weight and possible fat gain. You have to pay attention for a while, note how you are feeling and performing.

Off soap-box ;)

HolyCryo Batman!

“I am a part of all whom I have met.”
~ Alfred Tennyson

Rest days are wonderful. I have come to really enjoy them. It is hard sometimes to break the CrossFit metcon junkie syndrome. What a rush! But they can be draining and elicit over-reaching/training syndrome. Over the years, I have had to repeatedly remind myself to enjoy the work and remember the rest ...

So today, I ventured down the hill and found myself lolling near the new US Cryotherapy Center. It had come to my attention a few months ago and I thought I was game for trying it, in the summer. Winter months it is hard enough for me to keep that wonderful warm feeling that I enjoy. However, with my 100,000 meters of rowing and a load of TGU's in December I was still feeling the need for recovery, I thought it would be worth a look-see.

I browsed the website. All points led me to keep seeing the 'no appointment needed'. Surely, with all of this high tech, an appointment would be warranted, but no, that was not the case AND it was only $25 for a session, plus they gave you 40% off coupon for your first visit. Hmmm, was that a good trade? Could it really be worth it? I was really feeling the effects of yesterday's rope climbs, so maybe it would a good time to investigate further.

The answer was a resounding YES!

When I walked into the center it was very professional. I was greeted very courteously and asked if it was possible for a tour. Immediately, Owner/Operations Manager, Todd Kramer, offered to take me around and walk me through the process. I was able to watch a customer go through his session of brrr and he came out just fine! After a few more questions, Todd inquired if I wanted to register for a session. I was apprehensive, I knew that I wanted to do it, but again, the cold is really not my thing but how would I actually prepare for something like that. Just jump in. I agreed and was taken through a very simple process. I found myself in a bit of a sweat. For us reluctant first timers, they do offer a technician to pop on in with you. That was actually a huge relief. Todd was kind enough to volunteer to enter with me and we were on to the next step.

It was time. Some special dressings are required here to avoid frostbite, however it is optimal to have the maximum surface area of the skin uncovered! My pants were actually a bit long in this case, so I hiked them up a bit. Headband in place, mask set, gloves on, barely a second before the first chamber door opened and we were in. Acclimate to 95 below, right. I just kept telling myself that it was just like getting out of the car in Tahoe, that first chill and all becomes right with the world. (Hey! It's Tahoe!) 30 seconds and we were ready to hit the super sub ~ 200 ~ I took a deep breath and braced  myself, walked in the huge door and it hit, a moment of reality, damn that is cold! Mark said that my eyes flew wide open once the cold hit me. He was fantastic, talked me through the whole way, telling me to keep moving arms, legs, I jumped around and had to focus on keeping my mouth shut, not a great time for talking, just breath through the nose, tick tock. The countdown helped, I could make it and I actually thought at one moment ... hey, not too bad! Back to the 1st room chamber and it wasn't quite tropical, but ahhh. A 10 minute warm up on the treadmill walking was welcome.

I felt amazing! Energized, fresh completely reset. Yes, I would do that again.

Focus

Get so fixated on what you want,
that you drown out any vibration or reverberation that has anything to do
with what you do not want.

...don't forget about the rest...

Yoga
90 glorious minutes ;)

Still very stiff in the hips, hamstrings and IT band. Also feeling my lats tight. Certainly not feeling fluffy anymore. However, if my energy hits an upward beat today I think all is recovering well. Not quite the taper I was looking forward to but I am not unhappy. My overall health is more important and as evidenced by the weather this morning...autumn is here.

Tomorrow a small sampling of the tri and Sunday is go day!

Rest Day ;)

Joy is not the absence of suffering.
It is the presence of God. ~Robert Schuller

Yep, it's here. The rest...So why am I so excited about my new training schedule?!

It feels good, I have a plan for those lifts that I want to not just randomly progress with, I can't wait to weave it into the box, it is Saturday and I don't have something I HAVE to do for the first time in months. Rest.

Feeling yesterday's squats in the legs and eating nachos with a 'Rita instead of getting in my run...
  • I want to just blow it out a bit with a quick metcon, not for time or weight.
  • Enjoy a nice Mobility WOD and some time on the back deck listening to the breeze in the trees.

21-15-9
Burpees
KB OHSwings 16kg
21-15-9
Jump squats
Cossack squats
21-15-9
Mtn Climbers
SDHP 16kg

Now that felt like a cool breeze~

Couldn't help myself...stopped at the volleyball pit and tossed the KB backward overhead for a few lengths. I forgot how much fun that is and worked on juggling skills in the sand.
Staring at the net for a while, just taking a moment to enjoy the moment, I am still mulling over the 'play new sports'. Like Annie S. said about the games and why she was never there before...she was scared to put herself out there, yet she kicked butt! What is there really to be afraid of? Maybe just not trying something new and missing out.

SEALFIT Murph

Murph was today. Great day to coach!
We had two full classes, both newbies and veterans come out for Murph in the rain today.

Soaked tired and happy, good day in the box while our team dukes it out at Regionals.

As for me...in much need of rest, I was tempted by Rainy Murph, but decided that I need to listen to my body. I want to do this one with a weight vest and will be patient ;-).

Happy rest day. ~j

Hope to hit the track tomorrow for some endurance work.
